AV CAD drafting is the process of producing scaled technical drawings for audio, video and control systems using computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD. Those drawings translate an AV design into documentation that installers can build from, inspectors can approve, and technicians can service years later. This guide explains what AV CAD drafting covers, which sheets a complete set contains, what software the work is done in, and who actually needs it.

What is AV CAD drafting?

AV CAD drafting sits between design and installation. A designer decides which equipment goes where and how it connects; a drafter turns those decisions into precise, dimensioned, annotated drawings that can be issued for construction.

The distinction matters, because “we have a system design” and “we have a drawing set” are not the same claim. A design can live in a spreadsheet and a room list. A drawing set is a coordinated package of sheets, each drawn to scale, each carrying a title block, revision number and legend, and each consistent with the others. Producing that package is drafting.

Done properly, AV CAD drafting answers four questions that installers otherwise resolve by guessing: what equipment is installed, exactly where it goes, how every device connects, and what happens when something changes.

What is included in an AV CAD drawing set

A complete AV drawing set is built from a standard family of sheets. Not every project needs all of them, but these are the deliverables integrators are usually asked for:

What software is used for AV CAD drafting?

AutoCAD remains the industry default, and it is what most consultants, general contractors and architects expect to receive. DWG is the format that moves cleanly between every party on a construction project.

Beyond that, teams use Revit where the project is running in BIM and AV has to coordinate in 3D with other trades, plus AV-specific platforms such as D-Tools and XTEN-AV that generate drawings from an equipment database. Software choice matters less than consistency. A set drawn to documented AV drawing standards, using standard AVIXA symbols and a controlled title block, is more useful than a set drawn in a more capable tool with no conventions behind it.

Who needs AV CAD drafting?

AV integrators need it to install accurately, to pass submittal review, and to hand over documentation that is contractually required. It is also what protects the margin: rushed drawings become change orders.

AV consultants need it to issue a biddable design package that integrators can price consistently.

When drafting happens on a project

AV CAD drafting is not a single event at the end of design. It runs in stages: a single-line diagram for concept approval, coordination drawings for the GC before rough-in, full shop drawings for submittal and installation, then as-builts at closeout.

Because the set evolves across those stages, revision control is what keeps it trustworthy. A drawing set with no revision discipline stops being documentation and becomes a rumour.

In-house or outsourced?

Drafting demand is spiky. Two large wins in a month, then nothing for six weeks — which makes a full-time drafter hard to justify and equally hard to do without. Many integrators keep design in-house and outsource production drafting, so capacity flexes with the pipeline.

Frequently asked questions

Is AV CAD drafting the same as AV design? No. Design decides what the system is and how it performs. Drafting documents that decision to a buildable standard. One person often does both, but they are separate skills, and confusing them is why some “designs” cannot be installed from.

Do I need AutoCAD specifically? Not always, but you almost always need to deliver DWG. Consultants, architects and GCs work in it, and a set they cannot open is a set they will reject.

How long does a drawing set take? A single conference room might be a few hours. A multi-floor building with dozens of spaces, full cable schedules and as-builts runs to weeks. The variable is rarely room count — it is how many sheets the contract actually requires.

What makes a submittal get rejected? More often drafting problems than design problems: wrong title block, missing revision, symbols absent from the legend, sheets that contradict each other. A pre-issue checklist catches most of it.

Are as-builts optional? On design-build work they are usually contractual, and they are what the next service call depends on. Skipping them moves cost from this project to the next one.
